Parkinson’s Research: What We’re Working On

Parkinson’s disease is a complex condition that affects both movement and many non-motor functions, often years before tremors or stiffness appear. While today’s treatments can help manage symptoms, they do not stop the disease from progressing. That is the challenge this research is working to address.

A New Focus: Slowing the Disease, Not Just Treating Symptoms

The Gut–Brain Connection

Moving From the Lab to Patients

Dr. Subramanian and Howard University are working toward a large, multi-year clinical trial to evaluate oral Squalamine in people with Parkinson’s disease. This type of study is designed to carefully test safety and look for meaningful signs of benefit in real patients.

How Purpose Forward Foundation Fits In

There are two possible paths forward:

  • If federal funding is awarded, Purpose Forward Foundation support will help expand the scope of the clinical study—allowing for deeper analysis, additional patient monitoring, and faster progress.

  • If federal funding is not awarded, Purpose Forward funds will be used to launch a smaller pilot study. This study would generate critical early data needed to support larger trials in the future.

In either case, the goal is the same: move promising science forward responsibly and efficiently.

Measuring Success

Progress will be measured using well-established Parkinson’s disease assessments, patient-reported outcomes, and safety monitoring. Purpose Forward Foundation receives regular updates so supporters can see how the research is advancing and how funds are being used.

Why This Matters

Parkinson’s disease affects millions of people and families worldwide. Advancing research that focuses on early intervention, disease-slowing strategies, and real clinical impact offers hope—not hype—and represents a meaningful step toward better outcomes.

Purpose Forward Foundation is proud to support research that is careful, credible, and focused on results that truly matter.

Donor FAQ: Parkinson’s Research Initiative

What problem is this research trying to solve?

Most current Parkinson’s treatments focus on managing symptoms after significant brain damage has already occurred. This research aims to explore ways to slow the disease earlier, when there may still be an opportunity to protect nerve cells and preserve quality of life.
